5 Mind-Blowing Facts About Trees

Everybody knows that trees help keep our air clean, provide shelter from the hot sun, and provide materials for energy and shelter, not to mention making our planet a more beautiful place. But we bet there are a few things about trees that you probably don’t know that might surprise you. Check out these 5 mind-blowing facts about trees and renew your awe of these amazing natural giants.

They’re just as stressed out as we are!

Trees are extremely sensitive to their environments. Poor soil quality, competition for water, or any disruption to their ecosystem can inhibit their growth and disrupt their photosynthesis cycle. Next time you see a tree in your yard that looks “stressed out”, help it by enriching the soil, keeping it watered, and giving it room to breathe!

They help your business thrive.

Consumers are 12% more willing to pay for goods and services in a retail area that has “street trees”. (It’s kind of like subliminal advertising, if you think about it!)

According to the U.S. Forest Service, “healthy, mature trees add an average of 10% to a property’s value”!

They can live for a long, long, long time!

Methuselah, a Bristlecone Pine in the White Mountains of California, is one of the oldest known trees on Earth. How old is she? Experts estimate that she’s been around for about 4,848 years! You can visit her grove, but her exact location is a secret, so you’ll have to guess which one she is!

They can (and do!) talk to each other.

Certain types of trees warn each other when they’re under attack by insects. Since the late ’70s, researchers have studied this phenomenon in willows and poplars. They’ve found that trees infested with insects produce an excess of chemicals in their leaves which not only reduce the nutritional value of their leaves for the marauding invaders, but also warn neighboring trees, who immediately start producing the same chemicals to protect themselves.
